A Question for you...

In The Road Home, why are looms important to the culture? In particular why the color red?

  1. I think looms are important to the culture because they represent an old way of doing things. It's a way to hold on to the old culture of China. The color red is important because it represents the Communism in China. It expresses the principles of the Cultural Revolution and the mom in the movie may still hold on to that way of life.

  3. Looms are important to the Chinese culture because this was how the cloths were created in China before the common use of machinery. Therefore it represents the old customs and way of living. The color red could correlate to the new ways of communism in China but at the same time red is a color of good luck in China. So perhaps the red symbolizes good fortune for the young lovers because they eventually get married and live to old age. -Morgan Raddatz

  4. The looms were a craft the Chinese culture would do. They make them to wrap babies in and to wear for clothing. As Morgan was saying, red represents luck and joy for the Chinese culture. It takes away evil spirits and a lot of people use this color during festivals, weddings, holidays (a red envelope). You can't have the color red at funerals because it stands for happiness.

  5. I think looms are important to the Chinese culture because they were used as an older, more traditional way of making cloths during that time. The color red represents happiness, joy, and good luck. In the film it could symbolize the desire for a good relationship between the young couple.

  6. I think looms are important in the Chinese culture because they were a way for people to make clothes and also blanket's which are essential to living. The color red represents happiness, love, and content, and joy in the culture. In the film it was a significant color to Di and Luo representing love, but when the school teacher died the loom was used to represent mourning when the white clothe was made in the loom to lay over the casket for the funeral.

  7. The loom is a tool that Zhao Di uses to show her love for the teacher. She makes him the flag as a labor of love. The color red in Chinese history has stood for happiness, vitality, blooming, fire, so the use of it throughout the film was a good way to metaphorically depict the relationship between the two main characters. Of course because Zhang Yimou likes to be political in his movies red also has a connection to communism. The time period when the movie was set was during the anti - rights campaign. So, when the teacher gets called back and doesn't return for a long time it's implied in the film that perhaps he was called back for questioning.

  8. The loom symbolizes the hard work Di does to impress the teacher. This includes the work she makes and the quality of it - the red banner, the food, etc. The red symbolizes the passion, love, joy, happiness, and vitality she has for him and what he has for her. The red also symbolizes in the red banner the celebration of the school and wards off any bad spirits that might come. I believe that in "The Road Home," red is so important to convey the story Zhang wanted to convey.
